Septic separation distances in Idaho: the tank, the drainfield, and the numbers that move
There are two tables, not one
Most people asking this question want one number. Idaho publishes two sets of them: separations for the septic tank, and separations for the drainfield. They differ, sometimes by a lot, and the drainfield table is the stricter of the two because the drainfield is where effluent actually enters the ground.
Every figure below is taken from IDAPA 58.01.03, the Individual/Subsurface Sewage Disposal Rules, as published by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality — rule text with an effective date of 1 July 2025, downloaded and read directly on 14 August 2026.

The rule adds one line that is easy to miss and useful to know:
Effluent pipes have the same separation distance requirements as septic tanks unless otherwise approved by the Director.

So the pipe between tank and field is not exempt just because effluent is only passing through it. On a tight lot that is a real constraint on the route, not a technicality.
Separation distances for the drainfield
This is the table people actually mean, and it is where the soil group starts to matter. Idaho classifies sites into design soil groups A, B and C; most rows apply to all soils, but two do not.

So the familiar answer is correct: 100 feet from any well or domestic water supply to the drainfield, in every soil group. What moves is the surface-water row — 200 feet in group A soils against 100 feet in group C — and the downslope cut row. On a caldera lot near a creek, that single row can be the difference between a workable site plan and an impossible one, and you cannot know which column applies until the site has been evaluated.
Why a number you found online may be wrong
This is worth saying plainly, because it cost real time to establish. The rule presents both tables as multi-column grids, and secondary legal-reference sites do not always render those grids correctly — rows and values can end up misaligned, which produces figures that look authoritative and are not. While checking this page, one widely used reference reproduced the drainfield table with several rows shifted and a surface-water figure that does not appear in the rule at all.
Two defences, and neither is difficult:
- Read the state's own PDF. IDAPA 58.01.03 is published by the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and by the state's administrative rules office, and it is free.
- Check the effective date. The current text carries a 1 July 2025 effective date on these sections; an archived edition may not say the same thing.
- Treat any single number as provisional until you know your design soil group, because two rows in the drainfield table depend on it.
- Let the health district apply it. Eastern Idaho Public Health does this against your actual parcel, and its reading is the one that gets permitted.
The rules that decide the layout, not just the distances
Separation is one constraint. The same section sets the shape of a standard system too, and these are what turn a large-looking lot into a tight one:
- Individual distribution laterals run to 100 feet maximum, and laterals and trench bottoms must be level.
- Trenches are 1 to 6 feet wide and 2 to 4 feet deep, which fixes how much field a given area can hold.
- Total trench area is capped at 1,500 square feet for a standard system.
- Six feet of undisturbed earth is required between trenches, and again between the septic tank and the trenches.
- The site must hold two complete drainfields, each sized for one hundred percent of the design flow — the replacement area is part of an acceptable site, not an optional extra.
Put the separation table and the layout rules together and the picture changes: the question is never “is there 100 feet between the well and the field?” It is whether a legal field, plus a legal replacement field, fits inside what is left of the parcel once every separation is applied at once. Common questions
How far does a septic drainfield have to be from a well in Idaho?
100 feet. IDAPA 58.01.03 requires 100 feet from the drainfield to a public water supply and 100 feet to all wells and other domestic water supplies, in every design soil group. That row does not change with soil type, which is why it is the one figure that is safe to quote.
How far does a septic tank have to be from a well?
It depends on the well. The rule requires 100 feet between the tank and a public water well, spring or suction line, and 50 feet where it is another well, spring or suction line. The tank distances are separate from — and generally shorter than — the drainfield distances.
Do Idaho septic setbacks change with soil type?
Two drainfield rows do. Separation from permanent or intermittent surface water other than irrigation canals runs 200 feet in design soil group A, 125 feet in group B and 100 feet in group C. The downslope cut or scarp rows vary the same way. Every other row applies to all soils.
How far must a drainfield be from a property line?
5 feet, and the same 5-foot figure applies to the septic tank. It is one of the shortest separations in either table, which surprises people — but it is the surface-water and well distances, not the property line, that usually constrain a layout.
How far from the house does a septic system have to be?
For the drainfield, 10 feet from a crawl space or slab foundation and 20 feet where there is a basement. For the tank, 5 feet from a dwelling foundation or building. The basement figure is the one people miss when siting a field close to the house.
Do the same distances apply to the pipe between the tank and the field?
