Can you drive, park, or build over a septic drainfield?

Why the field is fragile from above

A drainfield is not buried plumbing — it is a soil treatment process wearing a lawn. Effluent leaves the tank and trickles through shallow perforated lines into soil whose air spaces do the final cleaning. Everything about that depends on the soil staying loose and the lines staying round. Weight from above attacks both: compaction squeezes the air out of the soil, and the distribution lines themselves run shallow enough for a pickup to matter. A shed, slab, or addition over the field blocks evaporation, adds load, and entombs the one component that will eventually need service. Can I drive or park on my drainfield?

No — the EPA's septic care guidance says it in seven words: do not park or drive on your drainfield. The field works by letting effluent trickle through unsaturated, uncompacted soil; tires and tracked equipment compact that soil and can crush the shallow pipes doing the distributing. It is the most expensive component of the system and the easiest one to kill from above.

What about guest parking at a rental cabin?

This is exactly how drainfields die at Island Park rentals: a full cabin, six vehicles, and the flattest open grass on the lot happens to be the field.
